A shrill alarm begins the daily fray,
A world of tasks I must pretend to know,
And forces me to greet the garish day.
I move with all the energy and glow
Of ancient moss that's been condemned to grow
Against a force of overwhelming might.
My thoughts are set to 'painfully and slow,'
I'm just a tourist in the world of light.

Don't ask my take on matters deep and grand,
My mind recalls a tale of sheep I've seen,
My true allegiance is to Slumberland,
A cozy, comforter-and-quilt demesne,
Where I'm a long-reigning, beloved queen.
I'm ill-equipped for this terrestrial fight;
This waking life is just an in-between,
I'm just a tourist in the world of light.

My eyes are glazed, my coffee cup is vast,
My posture slumps, my spirit is in chains,
A valiant effort, not designed to last.
And what small portion of my wit remains
Is spent on grunts and eloquent complaints,
To make it through until the fading night.
My nodding head the obvious contains:
I'm just a tourist in the world of light.
